It’s always scary to hear strange sounds emanating from any of your appliances, let alone the air conditioner that you depend on when it’s hot outside in Cutler Bay, FL. Recognizing these five AC noises will help you deal with issues that could result in expensive damage:
Hissing
A hissing sound usually indicates some sort of refrigerant leakage. Refrigerant is for cooling air and, if leaked, it’ll decrease efficiency and harm the compressor. Also, it’s important to note that exposure to refrigerants poses a risk to your health. Therefore, you should never attempt DIY repairs.
Banging
Any metallic sound such as banging or clanging indicates that you have loose or broken parts within the compressor or blower assembly. This may include pistons, connecting rods or even the motor in certain cases.
Screeching
Screeching AC noises are often associated with a fan motor issue or a broken belt. Such problems include overheating of the motor leading to poor cooling of the system. In the case of a defective fan, the system could fail completely.
Clicking
It’s quite OK to hear a clicking sound every time your air conditioning system starts up or shuts down. However, if you hear a nonstop clicking sound, you may have an electrical problem that could be the result of a faulty thermostat or control board.
Rattling
If you hear rattling or shaking AC noises, it’s likely that there are loose parts or foreign matter in the air conditioner. This can become a major issue if the debris obstructs the fan or other rotating components.
